ASRD Philosophy

Stunning decor justified by functional space plans and furnishings, purposeful lighting,

and craftily integrated technology - beautiful homes designed for how we live today.

We believe in an architectural approach to interiors and place significant emphasis on space planning.

Our custom furniture and millwork designs are the organic result of focusing on how people navigate and use built spaces.

Because great lighting is fundamental to architecture and interior design, its importance is a key consideration throughout our design process.

While we revere history and historic preservation, we also strive to integrate essential technologies into our work, resulting in exquisite spaces designed for contemporary living.

The bouquet of colors used throughout the loft all harken back to the wallpaper, employed in two colorways. ASRD-designed millwork includes kitchen and pantry cabinetry, a sled leg media cabinet, and oak slatted and upholstered screen walls. Invisible speakers and dynamic lighting strike the perfect balance of innovation and functionality, and an eclectic mix of furnishings conspires to create an atmosphere of an approachable luxury that will never be out of style.

Black Japanese Forest. Believe it or not, that’s the first thing that came to mind when we landed on our inspiration wall covering. The exquisitely patterned wallpaper was actually intended for another property, but a delayed renovation proved well-timed, presenting an opportunity to rehab a 1,700-square-foot loft in Boston’s South End. The wall covering highlights subtle dark notes of the natural world, which provided an edge that harmonized well with the Japanese-leaning aesthetic we sought.

Of course, our love of all things Italian will forever influence our work, and we only ever used the Italian version of the design narrative to reference the project. Color, pattern, and texture, sometimes whimsical, always rich: our ingredients for this urban gem.

Contemporary Colonial (Purple Passion)

For a residential client who thought they wanted a modern marvel, only to end up with something more traditional, the journey of discovery, reflection, and the occasional grief that comes with simply “figuring it out” can be long.

We collaborated closely with the architect to design this charmingly elegant 8,000-square-foot residence in Tiverton, RI. Although the architectural focal point was always the breathtaking views of the Sakonnet River, when it came to interiors, we sought to bridge the familiar and novel with a transitional approach that offered considerable flexibility. Versatility can be very important, especially when your primary stakeholders have strong and varying opinions about what constitutes a home’s style. Despite a few memorable challenges, such as the request to incorporate purple everywhere possible, the resulting design is one that we’re proud to call ours.

From intricate architectural details to meticulously curated wall coverings and fabrics, mindfully designed lighting, and a state-of-the-art smart system, this glorious home surpasses the needs of its inhabitants. It’s a welcome retreat for family and friends. Interestingly, we ended up with a purple passion, too.

The New Copper Standard

For a tech company comprising two distinct businesses with their unique personalities, this 4,000-square-foot commercial space needed to remain brand-agnostic. An MSP (Managed Services Provider) is the older business unit, with a laid-back and slightly retro vibe. An integration division focuses its attention on the luxury residential market, as it needs to appeal to a highly sophisticated client and partner base.

Because hues of orange are prominent in both branding approaches, we chose copper as a bridge, incorporating informal matte copper accents and elegant polished pieces. The metal, like the space, is at once approachable and refined. Copper also further highlights the warm tones of the brick and beam building’s original materials.

A close collaboration with ownership yielded an interesting source of materials and inspiration, such as a hand-painted mural that spans three walls of a hidden private cinema. While the wonderfully integrated technology has to be experienced to be understood, the Experience Lab’s thoughtful interior design is immediately evident. Staff and guests love the award-winning hybrid office-showroom, which is stellar feedback for designers and stakeholders alike.

Business In The Front (Gentlemen’s Brownstone II)

Drawing inspiration from a kitchen that was the home’s only recent renovation, we adopted a decidedly masculine yet relaxed approach, featuring blonde woods and stark navy accents. The bathrooms were reimagined with floor-to-ceiling textured tile, all doors and casing were replaced, and new hard pine flooring was installed to match the original planks that still remained in some rooms.

Our second brownstone project for an accomplished professional services duo provided a fun excuse to let our collective hair down. Unlike their last home, which was sold shortly after we redesigned it for mass-market appeal, this new purchase was about laying roots and personalization. The rooms are modestly sized despite it being a multi-story home, so we designed furniture and millwork to maximize storage and comfort while creating a bespoke language of style for the couple.

The comprehensive modernization features new and plentiful integrated and decorative lighting, but the real showstoppers are the wallcoverings: one fanciful paper winds its way up three levels, while the other provides a kaleidoscopic array of color and geometric patterns in the study. With full intention, this playful home is the antidote to work.

To the existing fine window treatments, we added opulent wall coverings, custom carpeting, and a saturated yet restrained color palette. Two of the home’s three modestly sized bathrooms were completely transformed, with a focus on luxurious materials, including marble, satin brass, and faux reptile skin.

We were already excited to take on a lite but comprehensive renovation when we received the call- Our scope increased in an instant due to a burst pipe. It can be a surprising challenge to make significant improvements to an already elegantly fulfilled home, but we took full advantage of the opportunity afforded us by considerable water damage. New herringbone wood flooring and custom furnishings, designed by ASRD, refined the home while enhancing its livability.

Smaller touches, such as the bespoke mobile that hangs in a bay window and the handsome metal TV frame, are used to further elaborate on our story of sophistication. Refined interiors wouldn’t be complete without purposefully beautiful lighting, and we met that need with an exciting mix of decorative and architectural luminaires. Water, meet fire!
